Varalakshmi Vratam

This festival is celebrated to honor Sri Mahalakshmi Devi’s birth from the milky Ocean and usually the Friday before the full moon (waxing phase) (Dwadasi thidhi) in the month of Sravana which can fall during the last week of July to August.  This year 2010 Sri Varamahalakshmi Vratam falls on the 20th of August.  All the Fridays in the month of Sravana are considered auspicious for Lakshmi puja and all the Tuesdays are auspicious for Mangala Gowri puja.

Like the Satyanarayana Vratram  the Varalakshmi Vratam is performed for all-round prosperity.  This is a procedure (Tantra) involving about a couple of hours time with chants and a story at the end.  Those who want to fast can fast.  Some perform this vratam in the mornings and invite people in the evenings and offer thambulam.  Others perform in the evenings in everybody’s presence.  For Lakshmi puja, 8pm to 11pm in the evening is very auspicious.

Required Puja items: Things may be purchased (Yadha Sakthi) based on one’s own financial capability.  However, one can just perform manasa puja (mental prayer) if none of the physical things are available.

-Fruits – at least 5 varieties (if possible include ripe mangoes)

-Turmeric powder – 100 gms or more

Varalakshmi vratha katha – Story

Hold some akshathas in the right hand and listen to the story with attention and devotion.

Looking at the assemblage of Sownaka and other maharishis, Sootha maha muni said, Oh muniswara’s there is a vrata that bestows all sowbhagyaas (auspiciousness, etc) on women, which was told to Paarvathi by Siva and listen, I will tell you the same.

One day while Siva was resting on his thrown, Paarvathi approached him and asked, “Deva, what vrata should women perform to attain sarva sowbhayaa, uninterrupted lineage, happiness and joy.  Siva said, Devi, there is a vrata that bestows sons, grandsons and prosperity and that vrata is called varalakshmi vratam.  That vrata has to be performed during the waxing phase of moon in the month of sraavana, on the Friday that occurs before the full moon.

On hearing this, Parvathi asked, Swamy, please tell the method of this vratha, whom should we worship, how and if anybody performed this vrata in the past?  Tell me all the details about this.  On hearing this Siva said, O Kathyaayini, let me tell all the details- listen.  In ancient days, in the land of Magadha there was city called kundina.  That city was filled with golden enclosures, and houses with golden walls.  There lived a Brahmin woman called chaarumathi. She used to believe that her husband was the living god and used to wake up early, bathe and worship him with flowers, then involve in serving her inlaws, then performed all the household duties with patience and perseverance.  Her conversations were just limited and sweet.  Goddess Mahalakshmi was very happy and her grace was cast on this maha pativrata

One day mahalakshmi appeared in her dream and told thus- “Oh Charumathi, I am Varalakshmi Devi.  I am happy with your lifestyle and that is why I have appeared to you. During the sukla paksha in the month of sravana on the Friday before the full moon, if you do prayers to me, I will bestow the boons that you desire”

Overjoyed with Mahalakshmi’s appearance Charumathi did pradakshina to the Devi in her dream itself and praised the goddess with many chants.

“ Namastae sarvalokaanam jananyai punya murthayae

  Saranyae trijagad vande Vishnu vakshathalaalaye”

And with several praises of the goddess.

Oh jagajjanani! People will be blessed with your grace, they will become scholars.  They will gain all prosperity.  Because of the merits of my previous life, I was bestowed with your darshan (appearance) Goddess Varalakshmi was happy with these praises.

Immediately after this, she woke up and looked around but Charumathi could not find Varalakshmi Devi.  Then she understood that it was a dream.  She immediately woke her husband and inlaw’s and told the episode who became very happy hearing her. They said, this is a lofty dream, you must perform this vrata according to Devi’s instructions without fail.  Charumathi told about this dream to her neighbouring womenfolk. Those ladies and Charumathi started to look forward to the arrival of the Sravana month.

The much awaited Friday before the full moon arrived.  That was the day that Valakshmi Devi told and all of them started to do the related chores.  They woke up early in the morning, took head bath, wore silk clothes and they all assembled at Charumathi’s home.  They cleansed the alter area with cowdung and arranged a mantap.  They kept a flat stool, placed new rice on it, kept kalash with mango leaves and banyan shoots and flower decorations.

They invoked Varalakshmi into the Kalash.  Charumathi and the other women performed the puja with devotion and dedication

Padmasane Padmakare sarvalokaika pujithe

Narayana priye devi supreetha bhava sarvada

With the above sloka, dhyana, avahana and shodasa puja was performed.  They bound the thora with nine knots to their right hand.  They offered several different sweets and snacks as neivedhya to Varalakshmi devi.

After that, while the women were circumambulating, they heard jingling sound.  They found anklets and other ornaments on their feet. Charumathi and the other women thought that Varalakshmi Devis blessings were upon them and were delighted. When they circumambulated the second time, their hands were ornamented with resplendent navarathna bangles and other jewels. They were over joyed.  On performing the third circumambulation, all the ladies got completely ornamented. All their houses became golden.  They were bestowed with elephants and horses drawn chariots.

Chariots drawn with elephants, horses came from their respective houses to pick up the ladies visiting Charumathi’s house.  Charumathi and those ladies treated the noble Brahmin priest (who was involved in making them perform the puja according to shastra) with sandal paste, flowers, akshathas and gifted (vaayana) with 12 Kudumulu,(rice flower mixed with jaggery made into patties and steamed) dakshina(cash donation) and thamboolam and did namaskar.   The Brahmin blessed them all.  They ate the prasadam offered to Varalakshmi devi and left for their homes in the horse and elephant drawn chariots.

On the way home they talked about Charumathi’s blessings and their own blessings. “ It is not ordinary for Lakshmi Devi to appear on her own in the dream.  Charumathi is a very very lucky person. Charumathi did not keep the dream a secret and did not keep everything to herself.  She told everyone and also let everyone become prosperous.  Charumathi is a blessed soul - having them know about it, made them also prosperous” thinking thus they were over joyed.

From then on Charumathi and others performed the vrata every year and enjoyed all the boons of children, grand children, wealth, gold, material things, chariots and lived happy lives.

Hence, O Parvathi, by performing this vrata and also informing others and helping them perform the vrata, they will be bestowed with all auspiciousness and can live happily.  Those who listen to or read this story will also be blessed by Varalakshmi Devi and they will get their wishes fulfilled said Paramasiva

Sootha maha muni said to Saunaka and other mini’s thus – “O Muni’s you have heard how Charumathi wished well for everyone.  If you wish well for others, goddess will be pleased and without even asking for it, she will bestow good things for you.”

Break a coconut and do arathi

Offer the akshathas to the deity, sprinkle them on your head and on others.

Now offer flowers, akshathas, haldi and kumkum and do aarathi once more and move the kalash pot to the north direction, sending the goddess to her abode.

Remove the coconut from the kalash and offer the kalash theerth (sanctified water) to everyone to sip and then you can sprinkle the theerth in your house and around the house.

The flowers and puja remnants can be scattered around a green plant.  The thora thread can be kept on the hand as long as it remains and then be put on a green plant or bush.

This is the end of the Varalakshmi Varatam
